Praying with Confidence: He Hears You!

Discover the incredible confidence we can have in prayer, knowing that when we ask according to God's will, He truly hears us.

"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us."

— 1 John 5:14

Good morning, dear friend! Isn't it wonderful to wake up knowing that God is intimately involved in our lives? Today, we're going to lean into a beautiful truth from Scripture that can transform our prayer lives and fill us with immense peace. It comes from 1 John 5:14: “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”

Think about that word: confidence. It's not a timid hope or a hesitant whisper. It's a bold assurance, a firm belief. When we come to God in prayer, we don't have to wonder if He's listening. We don't have to doubt if our words are reaching Him. The Bible tells us plainly: He hears us!

This isn't just a general statement about God's omnipresence, though that's true too. This is specifically about our prayers. When we approach our Heavenly Father, we can do so with the full confidence that His ear is attentive to our voice. He leans in to hear what's on our hearts.

Now, the verse adds a crucial qualifier: “if we ask anything according to his will.” This isn't a magic formula for getting whatever we want. It's an invitation to align our desires with His perfect plan. Sometimes, we might pray for things that, in our limited understanding, seem good, but God, in His infinite wisdom, knows what's truly best. When our prayers are rooted in His Word, guided by the Holy Spirit, and focused on His glory, we are praying according to His will.

How do we know His will? By spending time in His Word, the Bible. By listening to the Holy Spirit's gentle nudges. By seeking wisdom from godly counsel. The more we get to know God's character and His heart, the more our prayers will naturally align with His desires for us and for the world.

This confidence isn't based on our eloquence or our spiritual performance. It's based entirely on God's character. He is good. He is loving. He is faithful. And because of Jesus, we have direct access to Him. Jesus bridged the gap, making it possible for us to approach the Father with boldness and assurance.

So, what does this mean for your daily walk? It means you can bring every concern, every joy, every fear, every hope to God. No prayer is too small, no burden too heavy. When you pray for healing, for guidance, for provision, for a loved one, for peace in a troubled world – if it aligns with His loving and sovereign will, know that He hears you. And hearing is the first step to answering, in His perfect timing and in His perfect way.

Personal Reflection Prompts:

  1. Take a moment to reflect on your current prayer life. Do you usually approach God with confidence or with hesitation? What might be contributing to that feeling?
  2. Can you think of a prayer you've prayed recently? How might you reframe it or reflect on it through the lens of “according to His will”?
  3. What is one area of your life where you need to intentionally seek God's will more deeply so your prayers can be more aligned with Him?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible privilege of prayer. Thank You for the confidence we have in approaching Your throne, knowing that You hear us. Forgive us for the times we doubt or hesitate. Help us, by Your Holy Spirit, to align our hearts and our prayers with Your perfect will. May our desires become Your desires. We trust in Your goodness, Your wisdom, and Your unfailing love. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
